Overall, the Chili Cook-Off was a disappointment. It was so bad that by the end we were just hoping that what we were tasting would equal what the Costco (?!) stand was able to produce.
There were, however, two standouts amongst the lackluster entries. In a very tight race we declared the Huntington Beach Chili, with their unique use of shredded beef, our group winner. They barely edged out the Heart Attack Chili and their liberal use of chopped jalapeños. Both had excellent flavor, and would be welcome in our bowls anytime.
We were a little late to the party, and weren't able to get a taste of the Morning Thunder Chili (their logo was a lightening bolt firing in to a toilet bowl) or the eventual winner, Mishap Chili. The Morning Thunder crew had a bottle of Crown Royal next to their chili pot, and they were in good spirits when I asked them if they had any extra t-shirts (they didn't).
A big thanks to Team Flores for joining us, and to Zac for being a good boy all day and keeping an eye on our beers. He is a real Laski, indeed!
